where the attackers are coming, from how organized they are, you're also getting these reports from cairo, now we look back on it and, you know, you can plot out this as a very organized attack and from the very start, it looked like it was not just a protest, that this was an organized effort by an armed group of people to attack the people inside the consulate. knowing that at the time, again, i have sympathy for the folks on the ground it's not entirely clear until a little bit later on. >> we should stipulate that the, you know, $300 million was cut from the state department's budget request for security this year alone and they did have five security agents with ambassador stevens when he was there in benghazi. he felt safe. he felt there because he had spent a year there during the war contrary to early reports that were leaking from the hill he had no security. so there's a lot of politics also in play here. you've been around and you can see what's happening. >> yes. and i'm going to do my best to stay out of those politics, andrea. i will tell you that over two administrations, t

first of all, the king in cairo was very strong in describing what he described as collective punishment against the people of gaza. it was held up by hamas and egypt. it was a three-way complicated process. you had a powerful speech yesterday. the queen also spoke out about collective punishment. unusual for her to speak out very strongly in an interview on cnn. i want to ask, from your perspective, what needs to be done? >> thank you so much. i do speeches because of the reality with which we are all faced. there's a lot of frustration out there. we are a country that's invested so much for peace. we know that only peace would not allow those horrific images we just saw from haunting the lives of everybody in the region. it's a call that enough is enough. we have to accept once and for all that violence and war will not secure israelis, will not secure palestinians. only peace will do so. we are living that day in and day out. ultimately, unless we all acknowledge the humanity of the other, unless we acknowledge that the pain that you just put on your screen is a real pain that -- unle

help and right to demand of egypt that it protect israeli diplomats in cairo. there's a fascinating thing, michael oren said, which i think is mainly true, which is that, you and i have both been in tahrir square. we were there together a few months ago and you know what the people of egypt want. they do want jobs, they want freedom. they want accountability. and some of this anger that you saw this weekend was real anger, and a lot of it was channeled toward the israeli embassy when, in fact, the target of these demonstrators, mainly has been their own government. it's very useful for the people who rule egypt right now so have that diversion, i suppose you would call it. >> very briefly we should mention that hillary clinton today again came out against a palestinian state designation resolution at the u.n. in those meetings next week. and also, said that she is sending two envoys back to the region, but we know the story of envoys. they are dennis ross and david hale. >> coming back to your point about oslo, we've seen a lot of diplomats go to the middle eas

you could argue that the cairo speech in a way advanced what happened throughout the arab spring. that's -- isn't that a very narrow perspective to take. is it appropriate for mitt romney right now to be challenging the president on this issue when he is trying to negotiate something on behalf of israel at the united nations? >> the president isn't trying to at this point negotiate anything, the matter is before the u.n. it will only exacerbate the problem and raise arab expectation. whatever happens at the u.n. will not create a palestinian state. i think governor romney has appropriately challenged the president. we should be more aggressive. we should tell the u.n. if you move forward with things like this, then we're going to have to re-evaluate our support of certain u.n. programs. we have to be much more aggressive. this problem has to be solved between the israeli and palestinians and the efforts of this administration have not furthered that process. the bottom line, we haven't seen a lot of progress. what's happening in the u.n. today is not furthering the peace process.

his cairo speech and the legacy that he saw for himself in bringing a new voice to the table that he perhaps went too far with an israeli prime minister on settlements and had the blowback that he's now experienced politically and that in an election year he's not going to be able to accomplish anything given what's happened in this house republican caucus. >> that's why mahmoud abbas had to do something. he couldn't sit back and say you have your election. nothing is going to happen. i'll sit back and wait. his people wouldn't have allowed it. the politics on the palestinian side which need to be paid attention to as we pay attention to our politics as we pay attention to israeli politics. there's a problem that he's facing. he has hamas. he has dissent within his own ranks and had to show leadership and take this step. i think the problem here is that the u.s. did in fact fail. when we were confronted, bush and baker applied consistent pressure at some risk we defeated them and we got a prime minister who was ready to move forward when netanyahu was doing the same thing in the '90s
